KEYNOTE ADDRESS - BEING SMART ABOUT BEING SMART...!
We’ll focus on understandings and practical applications for supporting gifted/high-level development. Who is the gifted learner? What is a mastery orientation? How can teachers use the principle of mismatch diagnostics to address gifted learning needs? Joanne Foster will respond to these and other questions pertaining to giftedness—as described in the new book Being Smart about Gifted Education. She will provide evidence-based perspectives, current resource material, and practical approaches in her opening address, and throughout the day.
SESSION ONE
BEING SMART ON A DAILY BASIS:
AN OPEN FORUM ON WHAT TEACHERS REQUIRE
Who and what would best meet your needs in accommodating gifted learners on a consistent basis? What kinds of specific strategies do effective teachers use? What kinds of forums can and should we co-create in order to continue to address teachers’ concerns, interests, questions, and desires for professional growth in the area of gifted education? Joanne Foster will share insights and facilitate meaningful discussion in order to help educators make good and informed decisions with and for high-ability learners.
SESSION TWO
BEING SMART ABOUT MOTIVATION AND PRODUCTIVITY:
WHAT DO STUDENTS NEED IN ORDRER TO BE HAPPILY PRODUCTIVE?
BEING SMART ABOUT MOTIVATION AND PRODUCTIVITY:
WHAT DO STUDENTS NEED IN ORDRER TO BE HAPPILY PRODUCTIVE?
In Being Smart about Gifted Education, Dona Matthews and Joanne Foster examine motivation—the heart of learning. How do we facilitate students’ understanding of the value of learning? What are some of the achievement issues that children experience? How do we encourage effort and persistence? Together we’ll consider real cases, and develop a range of innovative and practical strategies for maximizing motivation among high-ability learners.
